The NESSI European Technology Platform aims to provide a unified view for European research and development in Services Architectures and Software Infrastructures that will define technologies for new, open, industrial solutions and societal applications that enhance the safety, security and well-being of citizens.
Furthermore, an initiative as large as NESSI could not ignore nor avoid addressing topic related to Open Source which do have some strong impacts on the software landscape in terms of process, business model, economic issues and global impacts in the ICT.
Contributing to wide and fast adoption thanks to its trend, Open Source nourishes and supports the dynamic of NESSI’s vision by defining a strategy targeted to European companies wishing to implement or adopt Open Source, as well as to Open Source development communities wishing to collaborate participating to NESSI.
Open Source has a catalytic effect by enabling acceleration of changes that are already under way in the ICT economy.
Open Source increases competition, accelerate open standards adoption and evolution, provides a working model addressing erosion of geographic boundaries, supports the services economy by increasing transparency while positioning software as a commodity and optimizing costs.
It also facilitates exchange and reuse of research results, which is a major concern in projects financed by public money.
With open source as one of the driving forces of NESSI, a number of open sources results are available from different projects.
These include
- Open source assets available from project Qualipso at www.qualipso.org
- RESERVOIR contributions to the OpenNebula cloud infrastructure with training support at www.reservoir-fp7.eu
- The repository of patterns and contexts available at www.nexof-ra.eu
NESSI will continue to support and monitor the results of the NESSI projects to maintain the list of results accessible as open source and relevant to the services community.
