Security and Privacy in the Digital World

On 20 June, the event “Security and Privacy in the Digital World” was organized in Brussels by Eurosmart – an organisation representing the Smart Security Industry for multi-sector applications. The event focused on topics related to smart embedded security for the Internet of Things, security of mobile applications and digital identity and access management in cloud based services.
Key note speaker was Megan Richards, Acting Deputy Director-General for DG INFSO, who reaffirmed that Trust and Security in the digital world is an important priority in the work of the Commission and also key pillar in the Digital Agenda for Europe. In addition, she informed that the European Strategy for Cloud Computing, anticipated in July, will not address trust and security. Instead, these issues are thought to be sufficiently covered by the proposal for the revised Data Protection framework (released in January and now negotiated by the European Parliament and the Council) together with a Cyber Security Strategy that will be released by the end of this year. She also said that the reorganisation of DG INFSO will include the ambition to form policies that take into account the direction of Research and Development in the ICT sector.
On the topic of Cloud Computing, Eurosmart stated that identity and access management in cloud settings are fundamentals to privacy and security. Eurosmart thus called on the European Commission to define guidelines for digital identity management and data management in order to ensure the trust for citizens, enterprises and the public sector with regards to data protection and privacy.
