NESSI's Brussels headquarters officially inaugurated

On the 2nd of February, NESSI invited its partners and European Commission and Parliament representatives to the official inauguration of the NESSI Office located in Brussels.

Proceedings opened with a film entitled "NESSI, Scenarios of the Future" before Jean-Paul Lepeytre, Chairman of NESSI and Deputy Director of Thales's Security Solutions & Services division, re-visited the key elements which make up the NESSI vision, highlighting the strength of the partnership between Europe's main IT and telecoms players, who are uniting their research efforts in line with NESSI's Strategic Research Agenda.

Jesus Villasante, Head of the EC Unit for Software & Service Architectures and Infrastructures, emphasised the importance of the contributions made by NESSI members to the platform's nine workgroups and said how impressed he is at what has already been achieved, adding that "what has to be realised in the future is even more impressive!" He is confident that NESSI can rise to the challenge and notably highlighted the excellent and effective collaboration between the NESSI constituency and the European Commission since NESSI's launch in September 2005.

NESSI Steering Committee Chairman Dario Avallone looked ahead to the future and the next steps to be taken in order to implement the NESSI vision. The first step is to bring NESSI's open standards-based backbone Nexof to life. The second is to validate and demonstrate Nexof across the European NESSI demonstrator, a network of interconnected research and industrial centres which will enable proof of concepts and prototypes of real-life scenarios to be generated, and will also provide certification to NEXOF-compliant applications. He also added that throughout 2007, specific efforts will address small and medium-sized enterprises, and end-users whose participation in research and workgroups is essential to ensure that NESSI's implementations fully deal with their needs.
