NESSI Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda 2013
|NESSI is very pleased to announce the NESSI Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda, in which NESSI presents reommendations as key for achieving the ambitious goals set out in Horizon 2020. Recommendations are given with respect to research and innovation priorities for future activities launched in the context of Horizon 2020. Recommendations are also given with regard to the policies and instruments that should be applied for implementing and selecting projects. As such, this paper aims at providing Software and Services input to the first Horizon 2020 Work Programme.
The content of this Agenda is the result of wide discussions within NESSI. It aggregates the input provided by NESSI Members through an online consultation, by the members of the NESSI Steering Committee and the recommendations of the former NESSI Strategic Research Agenda (2011).

Strategic Research Agenda
Updating the SRA – open to all NESSI members
We have initiated an update of the NESSI vision and SRA (Strategic Research Agenda) to reflect the emergence of the Future Internet as a convergence topic and as a research area funded by the EU. In addition to the Future Internet, the Services domain is a separately funded research domain under objective 1.2 in the 2011-2012Work Programme. The NESSI vision and SRA update started with a presentation and interactive session on the 27th September 2010 at ICT 2010, followed by an online contribution process and a half day workshop at ServiceWave 2010 on the 13th December 2010.
NESSI’s SRA is the basis for contributing to the Digital Agenda
Getting your needs and vision incorporated in the NESSI SRA is important in detecting and creating new research opportunities that can then be taken up at national or European levels, as well as channeling the important priorities to the European Commission.
In June 2010, a NESSI delegation led by Dr. Reinhold Achatz, NESSI Chairman and Siemens Vice-President was invited by Commissioner NeelieKroes to contribute concrete ideas to the implementation of the Digital Agenda. NESSI has issued an initial communication to the Commissioner on this topic, and will update it with the results of the SRA.
Building the SRA – a continuously evolving process
|The Strategic Research Agenda translates the vision of NESSI into strategic research directions. It is organised in 3 different volumes, with volume 1 designed to frame the general context, volume 2 focusing on the strategy to build NESSI while the 3rd volume, which is updated on a regular basis, details the strategic research directions.
In 2010, NESSI decided to evolve both its vision and its SRA, focusing mainly on the 3rd volume but encompassing also the context evolution represented by the smart services for a digital society.
The SRA revision process is currently on-going; it was launched in September 2010 with a workshop held at ICT 2010 in Brussels, followed by an online contribution phase that ended with the workshop held at ServiceWave 2010 in Ghent. The updated draft will be published in February 2011, and open for a final online revision period before issuing the 2011 revision. A draft vision document was issued in parallel in October 2010.
